I will be talking about soap root and its amazing uses.  I will will also be talking what soap root looks like and some other facts about soap root.

Soap root´s leaves are dark green and wavy.  They spread out on the top.  Underground is a sphere white bulb covered with brown fibers. The bulb is layered like an onion.  The fiber is hairy and dry.

Soap root grows in North America, Oregon and Baja California.  They are mostly found and native to California.

Soap root is edible. For the leaves you have to cook them and then you can eat them and they will be sweet.  Yum!  For the bulb you don´t have to cook it but if you don´t it´s going to taste bitter and soapy.  Yuck!   Unless you like bitter and soapy.  If you do cook it then it will taste sweet to.

Soap root can be used for medicine.  If you eat the bulb it will make your stomach feel better.  If your stomach hurts then you can eat soap root to cure it.

Soap root is used for fishing.  If a fish touches the soap it will stun them.  This is because it is toxic to gill breathers.  If you add too much it could kill the fish so you should not try it.  The bulb can be turned into soap.  When people did not have soap they could use soap root.  If you roast the bulb instead of cooking it then it will turn into glue.  You can use the fibers to make a brush and use the glue to stick them together so you can turn soap root into a brush!  Soap root was very useful because it can make things that would otherwise be hard to make.

After reading this hopefully you have learned facts about soap root that you did not know.  I also hope that you think soap root has many uses that were important.  If not I hope you think that soap root is an interesting plant!

An interesting fact about soap root is that the flowers only bloom in afternoon.  Since they only bloom in the afternoon that is the only time they can get pollinated.  When a flower gets pollinated a pollinator gets pollen on it trying to get nectar then the pollen from one flower gets on the stigma of another flower making a seed.

Even though plants are edible do not eat the plants!
